Common questions

Do I need to be certified to apply?

No. If you don't have a PCA certificate yet, S&A offers free 1-day in-person training for eligible candidates. Already certified as a PCA, HHA, CNA, LPN, or RN? You can email your application directly and skip the training day.

How long does the application process take?

A few days to a few weeks, depending on your experience and how quickly NY State DOH clearance comes back. Already-certified caregivers with clean clearance can move fastest.

Do I have to come in person?

Yes. New York State Department of Labor requires one in-person visit during the hiring process — even for experienced caregivers with current certifications. The visit is about an hour at the office nearest you.

How much does it pay?

In 2026, New York requires home care agencies to provide total compensation of at least $22.19/hour — paid as a straight hourly rate, or as a minimum hourly rate of $19.65 plus an FSA benefit card. These minimums are set by NY State and vary by region and year; your exact rate depends on certification, shift, and location, and bilingual caregivers earn a language differential — a recruiter will confirm current figures on your first call.

What hours can I work?

Flexible. Day, evening, overnight, weekend, and live-in shifts are available across our six offices. Tell us what works for your life and we'll match you accordingly.

Will I work near my home?

Yes — we run six neighborhood offices and assign caregivers close to where they live. Tell us your preferred borough and we'll find local matches.

What languages are you hiring for?

Anyone fluent in a second language has a real advantage here. Across our caregiver team we already cover 60+ languages and are always recruiting in Russian, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic, Haitian Creole, Yiddish, Farsi, Tajik, Uzbek, Bengali, and Punjabi.

What benefits are offered?

Health insurance, paid time off, training and certification programs, language differential pay, and a supervisor available 24/7 for support in the field.

What documents do I need to bring to apply?

Bring your Social Security card, a valid state-issued photo ID, your completed application, and a valid physical exam with TB test. Already certified? Bring your PCA or HHA certificate too. You'll also show work-authorization documents for the federal I-9 form at your in-person visit — the form's accepted-documents list shows what qualifies.

Do I need to be a US citizen to work as a caregiver?

No — you don't need to be a citizen, but you must be authorized to work in the United States. Bring your work-authorization documents to your in-person visit (the I-9 form's accepted-documents list shows what qualifies) and we'll verify them there.

What's covered in the background check?

Before the first shift, every caregiver completes criminal history clearance, reference checks, work-authorization verification, and ID confirmation, and has a valid physical exam on file. An old, minor issue doesn't automatically disqualify you — each clearance is reviewed case by case.

Is there a referral bonus?

Yes — caregivers earn a referral bonus when a case they refer comes to the agency. Referrals are handled during the intake process, so let your coordinator know about the referral; your local office can confirm how it's credited and share current bonus details. Friends who want to work here are always welcome to apply too.

Apply

A recruiter will follow up within 2 business days. Tell us what languages you speak and where you want to work — we'll match you locally.
